The Air Carrier Act of 1986 prohibits discrimination by air carriers on the basis of disability.
The Act includes provisions concerning physical
facilities and services to be provided to passengers with disabilities.
The following are a few of the points described in the Air Carrier Act.
Equipment used for assisting passengers with disabilities should be kept in
working condition at all times.
Carriers may not leave a passenger unattended for over 30 minutes in any device
where he is not independently mobile.
Carriers may not require a passenger to sign a waiver of liability for
wheelchairs or other assistive devices; however, they may make note of
pre-existing damages to the devices.
Assistive devices should be checked and returned (in the same condition they
were prior) as close as possible to the entrance of the aircraft, and battery
powered wheelchairs shall be accepted as baggage if the size of the airplane
allows.
Batteries should not be removed from wheelchair for storage unless required by
DOT rules for hazardous materials. |
