If you’ve been employed prior to gaining your disability, you’ve undoubtedly paid taxes and contributed to the Social Security System.

As a disabled individual, it’s likely that you qualify to get something back through Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

If you’re interested in qualifying for SSDI, or if you already have it and need more information, this unit is for you.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR SSDI?

1. Go to any Social Security office and apply in person, or
2. Call the Social Security Administration toll free numbers 1-800-772-1213 or 1-800-325-0778 TTY and set up an appointment to apply over the telephone.

WHAT DO I NEED TO APPLY?

You will need to know your Social Security number.

Medical records will be a necessity; you will be asked for the names, numbers and addresses of all the medical sources from which you have received treatment since your disability. This would include doctors, clinics, and therapists.

You will also be asked to provide a work history for the past 15 years, including the type of work you did, and how long you were on the job.

HOW DOES THE APPLICATION PROCESS WORK?

Your application will be sent to the Disability Determinations office and will be assigned a counselor to process. The counselor will send you forms to complete, regarding your daily activities and also your past work. If you don’t understand any of the forms, call the counselor who is processing your application. S/he will assist you.

After receiving your forms, your counselor will send for all your medical records. This is why it is crucial that you list all medical sources! All of your compiled medical information is reviewed by doctors who are part of the staff at the Disability Determinations office.

Once the doctors have reviewed your information, a decision is made.

IS THERE AN APPEAL PROCESS?

Yes. If your application is denied, you may ask for a reconsideration of your application.

You will be sent forms to complete, as well as asked for any new medical records. Your application will be sent to a new counselor to process, and will be reviewed by a different doctor.

If your application process is denied again, you may still appeal the decision. This time, an administrative law judge will hear your appeal.

If your case ever does achieve approval, your benefits would go back to the first month you were found to be disabled.
